Work of Art in Minoritenplatz

Information

Manfred Walkolbinger sees the 5 metre tall copper, iron and glass sculpture as a snapshot of movement equivalent to the communication that forms on a public square. Accordingly, the sculpture and the location reflect one another. The precise positioning was in alignment with a scar in the paving.---

A square in a city is primarily something static, a goal, a destination point, yet on the other hand it is also a place of communication, i.e. of movement. The inner part of my sculpture is like a snapshot of movement. Just as the sculpture becomes part of the square, so the surroundings become part of the sculpture by means of reflections in the glass surface of the sculpture. The sculpture stands in relation to the space surrounding it and creates negative spaces. In the same way, the sculpture contains negative spaces within itself with which the surroundings (passers-by) have to form a relationship. The exact standpoint in Minoritenplatz resulted from a gash in the paving of the square, which has been closed by setting up the sculpture there.
